Health

The Cane Corso breed is an overall healthy breed. But since it is a young breed in official recognition, we started with a limited genepool. In the beginning hipdysplasia showed his ugly face and a lot of breeders have selected severely on the hips. The CHD problems are now very reduced due to this selection. However due to this selection, the genepool is still limited and other problems started to show up more and more. It is very important to keep the genepool as large as possible. Only by doing this we can keep the breed overall healthy and the healthproblems limited.

We of course still do select on the hips. But hipdysplasia is not 100% hereditary. A lot is due to environment. Movement and food are the most important factors for the joints. Limited movement to protect the joints will keep the muscles from developing. It is those muscles that protect the joints and keep the joints together. So limited movement is not protecting the joints at all. But to overdo the movement on a growing dog is also not the answer. Some dogs are very active, some are more laid back. Since every dog is different, it is not possible to give an exact schedule of how much a pup or dog should exercise every day. It is up to the owner to know his dog and to know the limit. Just let the dog be a dog and let a pup play like any pup should be able to play. Just don't overdo it. But limit a pup in its movement and the muscles will not develop the way they should. And that pup will find a way to get rid of his energy! Chewing furniture or overly active behaviour in the house, where the short sharp turns the pup makes can do more harm to those joints than normal activities outside on his daily walks.

In the Cane Corso breed, we still often see a Cherry Eye. There are several ways to fix this. The best way is to just have it removed by a vet. Some vets want to tuck it back in. But unfortunately most of the times the Cherry Eye will pop out later again. Making a second surgery necessary. For this reason we recommend to just have it removed. The dry eye vet's love to warn us about are extremely rare. So the chance of this happening is really very small.
